Victoria hates nonsense. There is no need for it when your life is perfect. The only smudge on her pristine life is her best friend Lawrence. He is a disaster—lazy and dreamy, shirt always untucked, obsessed with his silly piano. Victoria often wonders why she ever bothered being his friend. (Lawrence does too.) But then Lawrence goes missing. And he’s not the only one. Victoria soon discovers that The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls is not what it appears to be. Kids go in but come out…different. With Bubby Dora leading the way, these and other sweetly imperfect ghosts haunt Lilah through seventh grade, and help her face her one big fear: talking to—and possibly going to the seventh-grade dance with—her crush, Andrew Finkel.

THE DOWNSIDE OF BEING CHARLIE
Jenny Torres Sanchez
Charlie is handed a crappy senior year. Despite losing thirty pounds over the summer, he still gets called “Chunks” Grisner. What’s worse, he has to share a locker with the biggest Lord of the Rings freak his school has ever seen. He also can’t figure out whether Charlotte VanderKleaton, the beautiful strawberry lip-glossed new girl, likes him the way he likes her. Oh, and then there’s his mom. She’s disappeared—again—and his dad won’t talk about it. Somewhere between the madness, Charlie can at least find comfort in his one and only talent that just might get him out of this life-sucking place. But will he be able to hold his head above water in the meantime?

VELVETEEN
by Daniel Marks

Revenge is best served cold and Velveteen Monroe is plenty cold. Readers of Carrie Ryan and Richelle Mead will love this dark revenge fantasy. At sixteen, Velveteen Monroe was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that's not the problem. The problem is she landed in the City of the Dead. And while it's not a fiery inferno, it's certainly no heaven either. Grey, ashen and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do there. Which doesn't leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind. Bonesaw.Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment he deserves. And she's figured out just how to do it. She'll haunt him for the rest of his days. It'll be brutal...and awesome. But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen’s obsessive haunting could actually crack the foundation of her new world, not to mention jeopardize her very soul. A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker. Velveteen can’t help herself when it comes to breaking rules . . . or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.

UNRAVELING
by Elizabeth Norris

Two days before the start of her junior year, seventeen-year-old Janelle Tenner is hit by a pickup truck and killed—as in blinding light, scenes of her life flashing before her, and then nothing. Except the next thing she knows, she's opening her eyes to find Ben Michaels, a loner from her high school whom Janelle has never talked to, leaning over her. And even though it isn't possible, she knows—with every fiber of her being—that Ben has somehow brought her back to life. But her revival, and Ben's possible role in it, is only the first of the puzzles that Janelle must solve. While snooping in her FBI agent father's files for clues about her accident, she uncovers a clock that seems to be counting down to something—but to what? And when someone close to Janelle is killed, she can no longer deny what's right in front of her: Everything that's happened—the accident, the murder, the countdown clock, Ben's sudden appearance in her life—points to the end of life as she knows it. And as the clock ticks down, she realizes that if she wants to put a stop to the end of the world, she's going to need to uncover Ben's secrets—and keep from falling in love with him in the process.

THE GREAT SCAVENGER HUNT SUMMER KICK OFF!!!

If you haven't heard of THE GREAT SCAVENGER HUNT, then you're in for something special. Author Kay Cassidy hosts this annual nationwide summer reading program. If you're a parent, student, teacher or librarian, you need to know about this amazing program! I'll let Kay tell you about it:

In an age where technology rules supreme, it’s easy for reading to fall by the wayside. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Let’s give kids an incentive to keep reading! How? By making it fun to read all kinds of different books. Books that entertain them, inspire them, make them laugh, or just take them away from their own challenges for a while.

That’s the magic of books, isn’t it? They can do all that and more!

As a YA author and proud owner of a well-worn library card, I also want to give back to all the librarians whose book recommendations have fed my imagination over the years and helped me grow as a writer.

I know it’s hard being a librarian in a rough economy. You’re strapped for time and cash, but still want to create fun programs to keep your kids and teens reading week after week. Not because they have to, but because they want to.

The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ summer reading program is here to help you do just that.
The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ is a super easy, totally FREE reading program for teen and youth librarians. This summer reading challenge is open to librarians in the U.S. and Canada, in public libraries and school libraries alike. It offers fun, fast, cool programming that’ll keep your kids and teens coming back to the library for more.

Over 300 YA and middle grades authors have created a 10-question trivia challenge for one or more of their books. Trivia challenges include fun questions like “What was the color of Moe’s hideous car?” or “What is Gemma’s favorite comfort food?” (Check out the book lists in the left hand nav bar to see all of the participating titles!) Every trivia challenge also has a special note from the author to give it a personal touch. And administering the program couldn’t be easier!
If you’ve been looking for a way to get kids reading a variety of books, look no further. You’ll find nearly every kind of book you can imagine: fantasies, historicals, mysteries, romantic comedies, sweeping literary novels… you name it. The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ authors include many New York Times bestselling authors and winners or finalists of the Newbery Medal, Printz Award, National Book Award, and Edgar Award. There’s truly something for every reader.
To participate, readers (called hunters) simply read a participating book, complete the trivia challenge, and turn it in to you. If they get 8 out of 10 answers correct, you get to enter them in the monthly contest. Easy, right?

I’ll choose one lucky hunter as the winner for the months of June, July, and August. Winning hunters receive a $50 gift card to Barnes & Noble to use in stores or online for whatever their heart desires. Even better, when they win, YOU win too… a library prize tote filled with more terrific Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ books for your library’s collection.

Fun, fast, simple plus free prizes. It doesn’t get any better than that, does it?
Best of all, participating librarians have access to all trivia challenges and answer keys year-round to utilize for their own library promotions. It’s a ready-made resource to support whatever creative challenges and incentives you can dream up!

Since launching in April 2009, nearly 1,000 libraries across the U.S. and Canada have already enrolled with more joining every week. The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ has been featured in VOYA, School Library Journal Teen, and Publishers Weekly Children’s Bookshelf. The program has also been promoted by librarians at conferences nationwide and endorsed by several state library associations via statewide announcements to all teen and youth librarians.

JAY ASHER ANNOUNCES NEW BOOK

I am so excited! Jay Asher just announced the upcoming release of his new book The Future of Us, co-authored with award-winning author Carolyn Mackler.

If you didn't read Jay's first book 13 Reasons Why, then you should - right now - run to your nearest bookstore or log in to Amazon and buy a copy today - read it - you won't regret it. It was one of my top favorite reads in 2010. (I just found out it's coming out in paperback next month!)

In honor of Jay's announcement, I am giving away a copy of 13 Reasons Why to one of you lucky bloggies, and a copy of one of Carolyn Mackler's books (I'm not sure which one yet) to a second reader.

Here's the lowdown. We need more followers! So this giveaway will end when A Thousand Wrongs hits '50' followers. That's where you come in.

To win a book you must...

1) Be or become a follower of this blog
2) Post a link to this contest on your own blog, Facebook, or Twitter
3) Comment on this post AND include
-- a link to your post that includes a link to my post. :)
-- the first name and last initial of the person who "referred" you to my blog
4) If you don't have a blog, facebook or twitter, then you can email the link to your friends and email it to me, too!

One winner will be selected at random. The other will be the person who referred the most new followers to my blog. That way everyone has a chance to win!

Contests! Contests! Contests!

In my ongoing quest for writing contests that are both reputable and affordable, I am thrilled to have unearthed one for novels. While contests for short stories and poetry abound, contests for novels are few and far between.

2011 Strongest Start Novel Competition is hosted by Create Space, the self-publishing arm of Amazon.com and The Next Big Writer. The grand prize winner wins $300 and a self-publishing package from Create Space.

While I do not necessarily advocate self-publishing for fiction writers, I do see this contest as an opportunity to receive professional feedback on the opening chapters of our books and a shot at winning one of the runner-up $150 prizes. Winning a contest like this is a terrific feather in the cap when searching for an agent or publisher.

So here is the low-down:

1) There is no entry fee, BUT...
2) You must be register with The Next Big Writer website to enter AND there is a membership fee involved (which is comparable to most novel contest entry fees)
3) Submit the first 3 chapters via email at the The Next Big Writer website

Another CONTEST to consider ends TODAY (April 26th!). The Write Path blog is offering an autographed copy of Holly Black's new novel The Red Glove.

The rules are as follows:

1. You must be a follower of the The Write Path blog. (If you're not, sign up!)
2. You must post the contest on the Internet ie... your own blog, facebook page or twitter, etc.
3. Leave a comment in The Write Path's comment section stating 1. Where you posted the info and 2. Answer the question: If you had the ability to curse someone, what would you do?(keep it pg-13 please)
4. All entries are due in by 9 am PCT on Tuesday, April 26th. I'll then pick the best, most creative curse, (in my opinion) and announce the winner.

Even if you miss entering this contest, Dorine (the blog's host) holds similar contests from time to time, so it's worth following.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for my next blog which will highlight a terrific new children's picture book Why Do I Have To Make My Bed? by Wade Bradford.
