THE GREAT SCAVENGER HUNT SUMMER KICK OFF!!!

If you haven't heard of THE GREAT SCAVENGER HUNT, then you're in for something special. Author Kay Cassidy hosts this annual nationwide summer reading program. If you're a parent, student, teacher or librarian, you need to know about this amazing program! I'll let Kay tell you about it:

In an age where technology rules supreme, it’s easy for reading to fall by the wayside. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Let’s give kids an incentive to keep reading! How? By making it fun to read all kinds of different books. Books that entertain them, inspire them, make them laugh, or just take them away from their own challenges for a while.

That’s the magic of books, isn’t it? They can do all that and more!

As a YA author and proud owner of a well-worn library card, I also want to give back to all the librarians whose book recommendations have fed my imagination over the years and helped me grow as a writer.

I know it’s hard being a librarian in a rough economy. You’re strapped for time and cash, but still want to create fun programs to keep your kids and teens reading week after week. Not because they have to, but because they want to.

The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest summer reading program is here to help you do just that.
The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ is a super easy, totally FREE reading program for teen and youth librarians. This summer reading challenge is open to librarians in the U.S. and Canada, in public libraries and school libraries alike. It offers fun, fast, cool programming that’ll keep your kids and teens coming back to the library for more.

Over 300 YA and middle grades authors have created a 10-question trivia challenge for one or more of their books. Trivia challenges include fun questions like “What was the color of Moe’s hideous car?” or “What is Gemma’s favorite comfort food?” (Check out the book lists in the left hand nav bar to see all of the participating titles!) Every trivia challenge also has a special note from the author to give it a personal touch. And administering the program couldn’t be easier!
If you’ve been looking for a way to get kids reading a variety of books, look no further. You’ll find nearly every kind of book you can imagine: fantasies, historicals, mysteries, romantic comedies, sweeping literary novels… you name it. The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ authors include many New York Times bestselling authors and winners or finalists of the Newbery Medal, Printz Award, National Book Award, and Edgar Award. There’s truly something for every reader.
To participate, readers (called hunters) simply read a participating book, complete the trivia challenge, and turn it in to you. If they get 8 out of 10 answers correct, you get to enter them in the monthly contest. Easy, right?

I’ll choose one lucky hunter as the winner for the months of June, July, and August. Winning hunters receive a $50 gift card to Barnes & Noble to use in stores or online for whatever their heart desires. Even better, when they win, YOU win too… a library prize tote filled with more terrific Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ books for your library’s collection.

Fun, fast, simple plus free prizes. It doesn’t get any better than that, does it?
Best of all, participating librarians have access to all trivia challenges and answer keys year-round to utilize for their own library promotions. It’s a ready-made resource to support whatever creative challenges and incentives you can dream up!

Since launching in April 2009, nearly 1,000 libraries across the U.S. and Canada have already enrolled with more joining every week. The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest™ has been featured in VOYA, School Library Journal Teen, and Publishers Weekly Children’s Bookshelf. The program has also been promoted by librarians at conferences nationwide and endorsed by several state library associations via statewide announcements to all teen and youth librarians.

  1. This is SO cool. I've got to get this into the hands of my students before summer hits. Thanks for the heads up.
