SCAVENGER HUNT POST

Today, I am hosting JACOB DEVLIN on my website for the YA Scavenger Hunt! When Jacob Devlin was four years old, he would lounge around in Batman pajamas and make semi-autobiographical picture books about an adventurous python named Jake the Snake. Eventually, he traded his favorite blue crayon for a black pen, and he never put it down. When not reading or writing, Jacob loves practicing his Italian, watching stand-up comedy, going deaf at rock concerts, and geeking out at comic book conventions. He does most of these things in southern Arizona.

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT

Interview for The Hummingbird

Jacob: Hello readers! Jacob Devlin here, author of the ORDER OF THE BELL trilogy, a YA fantasy series that will come to its conclusion this February with my third novel, THE HUMMINGBIRD. Here to introduce you to the series and prepare you for the release, I’ve invited a fan favorite to come chat with me. Welcome Pietro Volo, the grown alter ego of Peter Pan! How’s it going, Pietro? Long time no see!

Pietro: Good to see you, Jay! I know—it’s an exhausting business, bringing down evil queens and such. Say, you didn’t bring any pizza to this little shindig, didja?

Jacob: Oh, snap, I should’ve thought about that . . . there’s a Five Guys down the street if you wanna move this over there?

Pietro: Meh. It’s whatev. I’m here for the fans, both yours and Laurisa White Reyes’s! We’re talking about THE HUMMINGBIRD today, right? Book three?

Jacob: Nailed it.

Pietro: Then whatchu got for me this time, Jay? Let’s do this! *rubs hands together*

Jacob: Well, it’s important that we clue in all the folks who haven’t heard about the ORDER OF THE BELL trilogy yet. In one minute or less, please sum up what readers need to know about you and the ORDER OF THE BELL. Catch them up to THE HUMMINGBIRD, and don’t spoil the first two books. Starting--*glances at watch*--now.

Pietro: SothisreallyterriblewomannamedAvoria—

Jacob: Slow down, man. Remember I have to transcribe this whole thing. Take a breath.
*Jacob and Pietro inhale together, then let out a nice, slow breath*

Pietro: Alright. First I’ll admit that the trilogy isn’t entirely about me. The real star is this great kid named Enzo, who happens to be my best friend’s son. Oh, and my best friend is secretly Pinocchio, and I’m really Peter Pan. We had our own separate reasons for growing up and coming to the States, but some real twisted stuff from our past followed us. Enzo doesn’t know any of this until one day, our family members start vanishing into thin air, abducted one by one by a stranger with a scar on his face. So Enzo and I set out to find our families, recruiting some old friends of mine along the way to help us out. You might have heard of some of them—Mulan, Prince Charming, Alice . . . together, we uncover a terrible plot to bring the Ivory Queen into our world. So poor Enzo has a lot on his plate. Being a teenager’s hard enough—believe me, I remember—oh, and by the way, kid? You’re the son of Pinocchio, he’s been kidnapped, Wonderland exists and it’s going to try to kill you, and an evil queen wants your head. Surprise!

Jacob: I might be biased, but that sounds like tons of fun.

Pietro: Pssh, oh, okay then. Says the guy who isn’t living it.

Jacob: Ha, true. So then what else can readers expect?

Pietro: There’s romance if that’s what people wanna know. I take all the credit for being Enzo’s wingman. They can expect some mystery—like what happened to little Gretel and why has her brother been looking for her for twenty-five years? There’s adventure, magic, swashbuckling, and plenty of villainy.

Jacob: How should our readers prepare for THE HUMMINGBIRD?

Pietro: They have a few months! They should definitely start by reading THE CARVER, THE IVORY QUEEN, and THE UNSEEN. If they’re already ahead, there’s a Spotify playlist to help them try to mentally prepare, though this one’s gonna be a doozy for them considering not all of us are going to survive. Is that why you made the tagline Fight for the New World; Die for the Old? You can be so heartless sometimes, Jay. So many readers loved—

Jacob: Okay! I think that’s enough out of you for now . . . *nervous laughter* So, do you wanna show the cover teaser before we go?

Pietro: I’d be so honored. Here’s the teaser image to hold everyone over until the week of October 9, when the real thing will go live on Instagram! Be sure to follow @jacob_devlin and @blazepub for the takeovers and the festivities. Maybe you’ll bring pizza this time.

Jacob: Thanks for the plug, Pietro, and thank you to Laurisa White Reyes for hosting us on your blog today! For the rest of you, be sure to #WatchForTheHummingbird on February 20, 2018!

  29. The sweetest and most wonderful YA guy I've found thusfar is Bodee Lenox from Faking Normal by Courtney C Stevens. He's kind and compassionate, patient and understanding, and he helps Alexi (the MC in that novel) SOOOO much. him, I want someone like HIM
(although, i will clarify, I don't think there's and ACTUAL YA hero that i would want, on account of they're usually teens, and i'm 28. The IDEA of them though, that's cool, lol)

  30. Hmmm....That's a pretty tough question to answer. But, if I had to choose, the YA novel heartthrob I dream of kissing would probably be Ren from the Tiger's Curse series. However, I hope to find my own heartthrob someday. :D
